spring blossoms + mary oliver’s poem “mindful”

Apple Blossoms Medium Format Film

The other morning I had the “pleasure” of having my teeth cleaned – when I was walking back to my little car I noticed the prettiest pale pink blossoms across the street at the bank. I had three shots left on a roll of film from the weekend’s wedding…Needless to say, I had found a proper candidate for finishing the film….and am so happy I took the time to do it {even though I did get strange looks from passerby’s }

Mindful by Mary Oliver

Every day
I see or hear
that more or less

kills me
with delight,
that leaves me
like a needle
in the haystack
of light.
It was what I was born for –
to look, to listen,

to lose myself
inside this soft world –
to instruct myself
over and over

in joy,
and acclamation.
Nor am I talking
about the exceptional,

the fearful, the dreadful,
the very extravagant –

but of the ordinary,
the common, the very drab,

the daily presentations.
Oh, good scholar,
I say to myself,
how can you help

but grow wise
with such teachings
as these –
the untrimmable light

of the world,
the ocean’s shine,
the prayers that are made
out of grass?

Anyone have any recommendations for poets? Honestly, Mary Oliver is one of the few that I truly admire and can understand ❤ {and yes, I also do like Jewel’s book of poems…even though, apparently, I should not admit that in writing}. xx

Diaper Mornings with Mickey

vintage sofa hank film

Most mornings, after Daddy goes to work, a sleepy Hank comes down stairs to snuggle. While his big brother snoozes upstairs, he like to watch an episode of of “bo-bo” or Mickey Mouse. I enjoy these 20 minutes of somewhat quiet to drink my morning coffee & catch up on some of my favorite blogs…..The other day I was introduced to the work of John Dolan  {thanks to Let the Kids Dress Themselves} and was completely smitten with his gallery titled “Olivia”. I’m assuming Olivia is his daughter- and the gallery is random photos of her life- infant, with a new sibling, dance recital, driving a car, prom…and all these slivers of her life in-between. ORDINARY life. Not staged. Not posed with banners and signs and tags-just-off-mini-boden-clothes…And I glanced over at my Henry…still hanging onto glimpses of baby-hood every now & then…but it’s quickly fading…In the next month we will hopefully  saying goodbye to diapers…then, what is left? Two boys. Not a boy & a baby in the house….I decided I needed to put my coffee down & pick my camera up…..

Summer 2012: Hasselblad Square

As many of you know, last summer I attended this amazzzzzing photographer’s workshop – Film Is Not Dead  {FIND} with Jonathan Canlas. I really can not even begin to express how much these 3 days forced me to grow as a photographer & a person. I’ve slowed down. I compose with more thought. I click the shutter less. And now, I shoot film. A lot.

Besides all that I learned during the intensive course- I formed friendships that will most certainly stand the test of time. The support system of other FINDers is something that can’t be measured against. One of my classmates, Rob Davidson {check out his work- he is top-notch}, was so incredibly kind and loaned me his Hasselblad {square format camera…incredibly tricky to focus} to try out for a few weeks to see if it was THE camera for me…..In the end, I opted for the more versatile Contax 645….but if I had the funds…I’d be getting this camera too….And I stumbled across these images this morning while looking for summer images for a magazine cover….Yesterday it felt like summer here- in the 70’s…I don’t want to skip Spring – I can not wait to see all my apple blossoms and tulips bloom…but, oh, summer…me & the boys we can’t wait to greet you! xxhasselblad firetruck

IslBGI couldn’t resist posting the naked fire-fighter…my idea of a pin up ❤
